How to change your business address with the IRS

Businesses use Form 8822-B (Change of Address or Responsible Party — Business) — and like the personal form, it’s filed by mail, not online. It covers a new business mailing address, a new business location, or a change in your responsible party. One deadline matters: a responsible-party change must be reported within 60 days.

How do you file Form 8822-B?

  1. Complete Form 8822-B with your business name, EIN, old address, and new address (and the responsible party’s details if that’s changing).
  2. Mail it to the IRS center for your state — see the IRS’s Where to file Form 8822-B page. There’s no online or fax submission.
  3. Allow about 4–6 weeks for processing. Businesses (unlike individuals) do receive confirmation notices, CP148A and CP148B.

The 60-day responsible-party rule

If the person who controls or manages the entity (the “responsible party”) changes, the IRS requires you to report it on Form 8822-B within 60 days. Many businesses miss this — it’s separate from any state filing, and there’s a real expectation of timeliness.

8822 vs. 8822-B — don’t mix them up

If you’re changing your personal home address, you want the individual Form 8822, not 8822-B. If you run an LLC, corporation, or partnership — or need to update an EIN’s address — you want 8822-B. Our full Form 8822 vs. 8822-B comparison breaks down which is which.

One heads-up about this site: our fill-and-mail tool currently handles the individual Form 8822 only — not the business 8822-B. This page is a guide; use the IRS links above to file 8822-B. If it’s your personal address you need to change, we can do that for you.
